Dickie Bird has been presented with an OBE in recognition of his outstanding sporting career.

The popular Yorkshireman, who stood in 66 Test matches, received the honour from the Prince of Wales at a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony .

Mr Bird joked that he needed a strong tipple after the event, declaring: “I don’t normally drink, but I could do with a brandy.”

He described the award as a “great honour” and said it was something he would cherish.

Born Harold Dennis Bird, the 79-year-old was recognised for his lengthy sporting career and charity work through the Dickie Bird Foundation , which helps disadvantaged young people.

Speaking after the ceremony, he said: “This makes me look back to my playing and my umpiring days and also my charity.

“We give grants to help youngsters with their sports, they’ve got to be under 18, and my aim is to get them off street corners, get them away from television and give them a start in life,” he said.

Mr Bird, one of cricket’s best-known characters, played the game for Yorkshire between 1956 and 1964, and then for Leicestershire.

He also enjoyed a 23-year career as an international umpire before stepping down in 1996.

When the OBE was announced in the New Year Honours Mr Bird said: “I have always said that standing in three World Cup finals were my best memories but to get this is the greatest honour of my life.”

Lunch with Sir John Major

LUNCH WITH THE RT HON SIR JOHN MAJOR KG CH

The Foundation is holding a lunch with special guest Sir John Major in the Leeds area* on Wednesday, June 29^th. This follows the success of our dinner with Sir Michael Parkinson last September, when many people were unable to obtain tickets due to the high demand.

There are only 25 tables of 10 available for this event and so early booking is advised.

Individual bookings are £37.50 per head; a table of 10 is £350.00 if booked and paid for before 30^th April. Thereafter a table of 10 will be £365.00.

With the full approval of Sir John, the lunch will be a ‘Yorkshire Fayre’ with a Yorkshire Pudding Starter, Marinated Lamb and an Assiette of Rhubarb from our Yorkshire ‘triangle’, with Coffee and Mints to follow. (Vegetarian option available).

Sir John is a Founding Patron of the Foundation and has been expressing a desire to help directly for some time. We look forward to welcoming him.

All proceeds will go to The Dickie Bird Foundation, a registered charity established by the ex-Test Match umpire in March 2004 to help young people from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue their sporting dreams.
